How to get the TikTok text to speech voice (and better alternatives)

How to do text to speech on TikTok step by step, change the TikTok voice, fix a missing text to speech option, and use more natural AI voices instead.

· MyVoice Team

To get the TikTok text to speech voice, add a text box to your video in the TikTok editor, tap the text, choose Text-to-speech and pick a voice. The narration plays when that text appears on screen. If you want a more natural or distinctive voice than TikTok’s built-in options, generate the voiceover in another app, then combine it with your video in an editor such as CapCut before posting.

Below we walk through the in-app steps, how to change the voice, what to do when the option is missing, and how to use other voices on TikTok. TikTok updates its editor often, so menu names may differ slightly on your version of the app.

How to do text to speech on TikTok

These steps are the same on Android and iPhone at the time of writing (October 2026):

  1. Open TikTok and tap the + button at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Record a video or tap Upload to choose one from your phone.
  3. Tap Text (the Aa icon) in the editing tools.
  4. Type what you want said and tap Done. Keep each text box short, a sentence or two, so the narration matches the pacing of your clip.
  5. Tap the text box on your video. A small menu appears above it.
  6. Tap Text-to-speech. TikTok reads the text aloud using the current voice.
  7. Pick a voice from the list at the bottom of the screen, then tap Done.
  8. Adjust timing. Tap the text again and choose the duration option to set when it appears. The voice plays when the text appears.
  9. Tap Next to add your caption and post, or save it as a draft.

If you have several text boxes, you can choose the option to apply the same voice to all text in the video, so the narration stays consistent.

How to change the TikTok text to speech voice

Tap the text box again and choose Change voice (or the Text-to-speech option, depending on your version). Pick a different voice from the list and tap Done. The voice list varies by language and region, and TikTok adds, rotates and retires voices over time, including seasonal and character voices.

Where the TikTok voice came from

The well-known TikTok narrator is a synthetic voice, not a person reading your text. When the feature launched, the original voice was the subject of a 2021 lawsuit by Canadian voice actor Bev Standing, who said her recordings had been used without permission. TikTok introduced a new voice shortly afterwards and the case was later settled. It’s a useful reminder that voices come from real people, and licensing matters.

Text to speech not showing on TikTok? Common problems

If the Text-to-speech option is missing or not working, try these in order:

  • Make sure you’ve added text. The option only appears when you tap a text box on your video, not in the caption field.
  • Update the app. Older versions may not have the latest editor features or voices.
  • Check your language. Available voices depend on the language of your text and app. If none appear, the language you’ve typed in may not be supported.
  • Check your region. Some TikTok features and voices roll out gradually or aren’t available in every country.
  • Restart the app or your phone, or clear TikTok’s cache in its settings, to fix temporary glitches.
  • Try a different text box. Very long text boxes are awkward to time. Splitting them up usually helps.

Limits of TikTok’s built-in voices

TikTok’s text to speech is quick and free, but it has trade-offs:

  • A small choice of voices. You get what’s in the list for your language and region.
  • A very recognisable sound. That’s great for trends, less so if you want your own identity.
  • TikTok only. You can’t easily reuse the same voice on YouTube Shorts or Instagram Reels.
  • Limited control. Pacing depends on how you split text boxes, and there’s little control over emphasis.

Better alternatives to the TikTok voice

If you want a voice that sounds more natural, more distinctive, or matches your content across platforms, the most reliable approach is to generate the voiceover elsewhere and add it to your video.

Option 1: generate an AI voice for TikTok in another app, then edit

  1. Write your script with short sentences and clear punctuation. Our guide to making text to speech sound natural has tips.
  2. Generate the voiceover in a text to speech app or website and download the audio file.
  3. Open a video editor such as CapCut. Add your video, then import the audio file from your phone.
  4. Line up the voiceover with your footage, add captions, and lower any background music.
  5. Export the finished video, then upload it to TikTok with the + button.

This works for any voice and any platform, so you can post the same video to TikTok, Shorts and Reels with a consistent sound. For a fuller production workflow, including YouTube’s and TikTok’s AI disclosure rules, see our creator’s guide to AI voiceovers.

Option 2: use your editor’s built-in voices

CapCut has its own text to speech, with a different set of voices from TikTok’s. It’s a reasonable middle ground if you already edit in CapCut, though you’re still limited to that app’s voice list.

Option 3: record your own voiceover

TikTok’s editor also lets you record a voiceover over your video. If you’re comfortable speaking, your own voice is the most personal option of all.

Using MyVoice for TikTok voiceovers

MyVoice is an Android text to speech app with 278 natural AI voices across 15 languages, including UK, US, Australian, Indian, Irish and Nigerian English accents. You can filter voices by gender, age and accent, and preview any of them before choosing. On paid plans (from $2.99 a month, see pricing) you can download what you’ve typed as an audio clip in your chosen voice, ready to import into CapCut or another editor.

You can hear every voice on our voice sampler without installing anything. The free plan includes a monthly AI voice allowance for trying voices in the app, but audio downloads need a paid plan. If you’re comparing free options, our guide to free text to speech covers what each kind of tool includes.

Labelling AI content on TikTok

TikTok asks creators to label content that is completely generated or significantly edited by AI and shows realistic-looking scenes or people. A narrator voice over your own footage isn’t the main focus of that rule, but if your video uses AI to create realistic people or events, turn on the AI-generated content label in your post settings before publishing. Never use an AI voice to imitate a real person without permission.

FAQs

What is the TikTok text to speech voice called?

TikTok shows voice names in the voice picker, and the list changes over time and by region. The default English voice is the familiar female narrator most people mean when they say “the TikTok voice”.

Is there a TikTok voice generator outside the app?

Many websites claim to recreate the TikTok voice. Be careful with these: check who runs them and what rights you have to use the audio. A clearly licensed text to speech app is the safer choice.

Why can’t I find text to speech on TikTok?

Usually it’s because the option only appears when you tap a text box on the video. If it’s still missing, update the app, check your language, and remember some features vary by region.

Can I add my own AI voice to a TikTok video?

Yes. Generate and download the audio in another app, combine it with your video in an editor such as CapCut, then upload the finished video to TikTok.

Is TikTok text to speech free?

Yes, the built-in voices are free to use in the TikTok editor.
